Hurling & Camogie

Hurling & Camogie

Hurling (men) and Camogie (women) have been described as "hockey in the air" or "the fastest game on grass," although these descriptions really don't do the games justice. To truly get a feel for the spirit of the sport requires that you see it in action. It requires a blend of speed, unrivaled coordination, stamina and fearlessness that few sports can match.  The best players cannot be spotted by their stature, as the sport favors skill over size, coordination over strength, and brains over brawn.  Field awareness and accurate striking, skills which developed in baseball, soccer, lacrosse and hockey, are premium attributes.

Points are scored in two ways; into the net for 3 points or above the net for 1 point. The game seldom stops but for a few seconds and the ball travels up and down the pitch at breakneck pace.  Scoring occurs often with as many as 20 scores per team in a single game.
It is played with a long stick with a broad and flat end ("bas"), which allows the player to control the ball in the air as well as on the ground. The dangerous appearance of the game is misleading as injuries are less frequent than soccer.
